Any answer that sounds plausible has merit. I was not there when humans first appeared on Earth. I also do not know anyone who was there to witness the event. Any conclusion needs proof to validate its claim. We do not have enough information to provide such proof. We are left only to ponder the possibilities.
But here is another thought. If we were instantly created at some point, containing all the capacity of modern human ability, then why did we not record the event? It seems to me that such an occurance would be rather important to the first humans.
Perhaps some environmental phenomena might have hindered technological advancement. We were unable to record the event in any lasting manner. Maybe God just didn't want us to know so that we would have to rely on faith. I have no idea why God would so such a thing, but hey, I'm not God.
If God exists, then we will know or not know the answer however God wills it.
If God does not exist, then it will be difficult to come to any conclusion given the information we have today. Look up evolution if you want. Determine for yourself if it has merit. But consider that evolution and God are not necessarily mutually exclusive. God may have created the conditions that allowed our evolutionary growth into modern humans. Once again, I wasn't there so I don't know.

Evolution is the only EXPLAINABLE way that the human race came into existence, with natural selection being the basis of our creation.
Out of the three possibilities (intelligent design, pure chance, and natural selection), natural selection is obviously the only choice that makes sense in creating us.
Intelligent design is pretty much ruled out, since that raises the question as to where God came from. Considering that God would have to be EXTREMELY complex to create things out of nothing, it only makes sense that He would have to evolve from something else to get to His complexity, which just brings it all around in a circle. Plus, this idea would fail to explain many things that have been observed in nature, along with fossil records.
Pure chance is then ruled out, since it is just so unstable and improbable.
Natural selection, however, is the GRADUAL evolution over time, so it breaks up the amount of chance it takes to get from a monkey to a human, getting closer and closer by small increments. While the pure chance choice is just shooting from a monkey to a human all at once, something pretty much impossible, natural selection gets there one step at a time. There is also sufficient scientific proof backing up this choice that it makes it pretty much obvious that this makes the most sense out of the three possibilities.
As for scientific references, I strongly suggest Richard Dawkins's book The God Delusion. He dedicates a whole chapter on this subject, and it is extremely interesting and filled with examples.

Your question is flawed, because it makes the assumption that evolution and God are mutually exclusive. (Which is what the christian 'bible scientists' want you to think, and what some of the atheistic biologists are stupid enough to think). God made the entire universe. He can do anything, and if He chooses to create us using evolution, that's His choice. Science can not, and does not try, to prove or deny His existence. The theory of evolution is no exception. God can intervene and influence events, but does so in subtle ways because He wants us to be able to explain our past using our senses to observe and our minds to conclude. He does not simply violate the laws of nature that He created in order to give insecure Christians "proof" of His existence. (then it would be impossible to have faith. Why don't you idiotic "intelligent design" buffoons try and wrap your brains around that.)

Scientifically speaking, it is a product of evolution, the unicellular intelligence improving the survival skills with each later model of reproduction.

As I understand it, all the human diversity on the planet today (in particular blood types) couldn't have originated from just two original specimens. Evolution, in my opinion, does seem to be a fairly complete explanation.

Evolution is not a clear answer at all, the creation myth won't hold water in my mind as a science person. What is Plauusable is the Panspermia Theory. This theory suggests our live are from outer space,

I'm in the corner of evolution. The skeletal remains of "Lucy" seem to support that belief. The real question is, what sparked life on the planet. There in lies the rub!
