I lived in Los Angeles for a number of years and ran into celebrities from time to time. Fortunately, none of them were seriously injured. (ha ha)
Actually, the general consensus of Angelenos is that it is best to act casual and not go up to celebrities when they are out in public. In other words, treat them as regular people. One Halloween I was at the mall with my son when I looked over and saw the actor Ed Asner with some folks, presumably his family. Nobody seemed to notice it was him. He happened to glance my way and saw me looking, so I smiled and gave him a polite howareya head nod and he nodded back. It was a perfectly pleasant, quiet, hassle-free encounter.

As a former waiter I've met quite a few celebrities and pro athletes. Tom Selleck was a regular at the restaurant I worked at when I lived back home in Hawaii. (when he was filming Magnum P.I.) He and his family would come in a few times a month and I waited on him on more that a few occasions. He was very cool, and very easy to wait on, and very funny. Just like on the show. And he always tipped me very well, but then again, most of my attention was on his table. Pat Morita (karate kid, wax on, wax off guy, yeah you know him) He was also a regular. Very nice guy.
And Tony Curtis, (Jamie Curtis's dad) he was also very cool when he came in. Also very nice guy. There's a lot more that I can't think of off hand. I can also remember the A--holes. Remember Mark Spitz, the Olympic swimmer. He and his wife were total a--holes. They thought they owned the whole f---en world. Sonny Bono and his 2nd wife and kids. No, he wasn't an a--hole neither was his wife, he just didn't say a single word, his wife did all the talking for him. That was weird. It wasn't like I was going to ask him to sing " I got you babe"
