Ah yes- that tiny bit of sand- the particulate gets moved into the scenario, which might cause a bit of pertabation, but alas- in working with the matter at hand, the most prolific oyster uses this small grain of sand as "grist for the mill" and turns out a most wonderful pearl.

Grist for the mill is whatever raw material you start with to get a final, useful product. Kind of like "if life gives you lemons, make lemonade".
