I am enrolled in a knitting class which I find a bit overwhelming. The ladies in the course keep telling me that I might be better at crochet. Is crochet indeed easier?

I have attempted knitting a few times. Never could get the hang of it. My stitches always kept getting tighter and tighter. When I tried crochet, it was very easy to get the hang of it right off. One needle (with a hook) is better for me than two needles (with points).

If you can learn the "language" of crocheting (which is basically a lot of abbreviations: ch = chain; sc = single crochet; dc = double crochet; tr = treble crochet; etc, etc.), then you should be comfortable with it.

Crochet is a heavier craft whereas knitting is softer. I have seen some crochet patterns (for advanced projects) that actually look as if they have been knitted -- cable stitches, ribbed stitches, etc. I haven't begun one of those projects yet. My biggest project was making a huge coverlet (fits on my full-size bed) that used different stitches per row. It worked up beautifully, and this is the first project I actually completed that I did NOT give away!

Good luck in your crafting!

I do both, but i'm a lot faster at crochet than i am at knitting.
You should easily be able to pick up the instructions from a book/pattern, but if you can find someone to actually show you, then that would be better and easier for you to learn.

Go ahead and give it a go, but also try and keep up with the knitting too......practice makes perfect.

I knit and crochet. I crochet alot faster becasue I am not working woth 2 needles. It is easier. The only problem I have with crochet is I like knit items better, but I stick with crochet!!

I find crocheting to be a bit simpler just because there is only one hook instead of two needles. Either of them is intimidating at first. Once you get the hang of it, knitting will get easier. Just start with something simple -- make small squares of all the different stitches. It will get easier.PS -- I am a lefty and I knit and crochet right-handed!!

Crochet vs Knitting
I love both actually. Crochet is faster but uses more yarn. Crocheted afghans are generally going to be heavier than knitted ones. Some things look better knitted and somethings were meant especially for crochet i.e. granny squares and doilies. I would say learn them both and decide. If you love working with yarn both will come to you eventually.

I think so. I do both, but I prefer crochet. It goes much faster than knitting, and it just seems easier - maybe it's the way my brain works! I have many, many crocheted afghans/scarves/etc. that I have made; I only have one knitted project complete. I guess that says it all.

Crochet isn't easier, just different.

If you're having problems with the class, it may not be you - it may be the instructor. I have taught many people to knit and never had even one who couldn't get it within 20 minutes.

If you want to learn, look for a Stitch'n'***** group in your area (see link below) and see if anyone in the group will teach you (probably someone will teach you for free!). I bet you can find a better teacher than you've had!

I can do both, but I prefer the look and drape of knitting. Perhaps someone in your class could be more patient with you and show you the stitch outside of class once they have learned the basic knit stitch. Once you get the hang of that, all of the other stitches will seem easy to you. I have taught several people to knit (2 of which have far-exceeded their mentor) and I never show them the diagrams -- I just have them watch and try. Sometimes using a thicker yarn and needles will make it more visual for you. I have even taught my 7 and 8 year-old sons to knit using larger needles. Keep trying, you can do it!

Try crocheting, you may like it better. I do both. But prefer knitting clothing because knitting patterns fit better and use less yarn, but I crochet larger items like afgans, because it goes faster.
I used to teach knitting and crocheting.
The people who caught on to the knitting really wanted to learn how to do it.
Yet everyone learned to crochet.
I guess it must be easier to learn.

I can not knit, but I can crochet. It is not that hard if you can find someone who can show you how. Or even read a book and follow illistrations. I learned when I was 7 years old. Good Luck.
