Yes. the chemicals they use to treat the fabric- which is called 'sizing' is really scratchy and could possibly make you sick were you to sleep on it without washing it.

Yes, all things should be washed before using. Due to all the reasons listed above, sizing, machines and workers. Plus exhaust fumes from shipping, potential hazardous chemicals either from the clothing, the plant, the warehouse or shipping. Once the product leaves the manufacturer they have no control over what happens and it could be exposed to all sorts of things. The chances of you developing anything other than a mild skin irritation are slim but why take the chance since they will feel so much better after they have been washed. Sweet dreams.

Yes.
The manufacturing process of cloth involves numerous 'baths', but the final, folded product has only been touched by machines that may or may not have slight oily contaminates that could be transferred to the cloth. Also, washing new cloth, including clothing, opens the pores of the cloth, thus allowing air to pass through. This explains why new, unwashed, cloth seems to be heavier and hotter.
A second, more mundane, reason for washing new bed linen is the result of an intelligent 'old wives tale': You don't know where it's been or who's been touching it. It's only common sense.

Yes, of course it needs to be washed! It's not washed prior to shipment so you don't know how many hands have been on it! And, it just feels more comfy after being washed at home!

It does not Have to be washed if it is new, however you should really wash it anyway because of the manufacturing and handling process. Add some bouce sheets to the dryer.

Cloth items are shipped with sizing to keep them stiff and nice looking in the stores. It won't hurt you to sleep on them without washing them. Usually the sizing is starch or corn based.

It's a good idea to do it, for health reasons, to remove the sizing they use, and it will just get softer and smell better.
