adding table salt to the washing machine on first wash has always worked best for me, add the salt while your washer is filling up when clothes are completely submerged stop washer and allow clothes to soak for 15-20 minutes then restart the washer you shouldn't have any running. works best in warm water to allow the salt to dissolve.

I can only assume you are referring to washing store-bought clothes. If so, all clothes with colored fabric come color-fast. However, even the most color-fast clothes will fade some when washed in hot or warm water.
The fix is: when washing colored clothes the first time, wash in cold water. That will help 'set' the color.
If, on the other hand, you are washing or wearing colored clothes that were handmade and dyed that are rubbing off, running, or fading, either the improper mordant (color setting mixture when dying) was used or it was used improperly. If that is the case, your reds will eventually end up light pink, dark blues will be baby blues, etc.

You can soak the clothes in table salt and cold water for 30 minutes or so and this will set the color. There are probably also some commercial products that will do the same and cost more money. Don't soak different colors together though.

Some colors fade because of their reaction to old stains and spots. Use Tide To Go sample, so you can always take fresh stains off your clothes. Here's the website http://www.upkb.com/tidetogo.php where you'll find more details about this product.

White distilled vinegar, one cup to set the color the first time you wash the new clothing, 1/2 cup thereafter. No, the clothes will not smell of vinegar. Have used this solution for years with unerring results.

Whites are generally washed in hot water and colors in cold water, to prevent the color from bleeding. That's probably the only difference. It's actually kind of ridiculous to have so many fabric-type settings on a washing machine. You just have to know that delicates go in the delicate cycle (low agitation speed) in cold or warm water, colored fabrics go in cold water at normal speed, permanent press goes in warm at medium speed, and white cottons and linens go in hot at normal speed.
