Time To Make A Movie

depends on the movie, location, setings, sets, cast, various things.

Take for example a movie like Lord of the Rings..

The mountain top they used in The Two Towers for the palace, was the same mountain top (new background) used for the round city in Return of the King.
They build both sets on the same site.

And from what i hear at least the Towers one was very full buildings.

Then you have the weather.

In Die Hard 2 they wanted to film it at Dulles International Airport in DC. But it was not snowing when they needed it.
So they went to Denver instead.

Cast can be a problem.

Once everything gets going, the filming itself can take days, weeks, months, even years depending on how much has to be done. Alot of your big movies with long wait times (star wars is a good one) is because 90% of what happens doesnt happen on the set.

From the time the concept is thought up to the final editing, it can take anywhere from a year to a few decades (seriously, LOTS of movies have been in pre-production, getting rights, being written, ideas pitched, etc. for a long long long time.)

The actual filming for your average movie is about 3 months. That, of course, depends on a lot. If the movie is mostly about small children, it can shoot a lot longer (kids are allowed 4 hours a day to work). If it doesn't require a lot of sets and scene changes, and the actors are adults, some can shoot in a lot less time.

Usually three months of principle shooting, plus more months for special effects and pick-up shots.

Lord of the Rings took 19 months, plus endless pick-up shots

3-5 months, dependiing upon the complexity of the movie. a couple of movies like the Da Vinci Code and so forth took longer to make because of special permissions and so forth. a movie can be made in 3 months or in 6 months, depending upon the budget, the script, the complexity, the location and other elements.
