Bettas need a bare minimum of 1 gallon of water. This is providing that you clean it religiously and really watch the qater quality. A tank of about 5 gallons is better, as you can go longer without cleaning it and the larger the tank the more room you have for mistakes. Plus, the fish will be happier with more swimming room. And while not completely necessary, a filter made specifically for small tanks is helpful and not that expensive (see sources). A couple plants (live or plastic) are also nice.

As far as cleaning goes, you should do a 25% water change, and it is helpful to get a small siphon (available at most pet stores) so that you can clean the gravel or sand. For a 1 gallon tank you should do a water change every 3 to 4 days, for a 2-3 gallon twice a week, for a 5 gallon once a week, and with 10 gallons or more you could probably get away with once every two weeks. Then again, these are just guidelines, you may have to adjust it if you notice the tank getting dirtier sooner. It's also a good idea to test your water every week or so - I use Jungle 5 in 1 test strips, they are easy to use.

For eating: In my experience Bettas will eat just about anything. You can buy special Betta bites for their staple diet, but they also appreciate frozen bloodworms or tubifex worms (again, they can be bought at most pet stores). Feed only a pinch of food or a couple worms once a day, and remove any uneaten food. Some people skip feeding their Betta one day out of the week, to help keep food from decaying and releasing ammonia.

Well, I can't think of anything else, but if you have any other questions let me know. And, I'm not trying to sound harsh, but please do your research *before* you buy a pet, rather than after. :-)

Yep fishies poo.

Fish poop and uneaten food turn into ammonia in the water. Ammonia is very painful and burns the fish. It also weakens them and makes them more susceptible to other illness.

If the bowl is 1 gallon or less you would need to do three (3) 85% water changes per week in order to get the ammonia out of his bowl and keep it out.

Good luck with the your fishy fish.
