Try downshifting through all five speeds until you get to first gear... this is very hard on the engine, but it might help.... or, if that doesn't work, find a soft spot on the side of the road that has a slight incline and maneuver your truck up that slight incline. Why is this a fear for you? Get your truck serviced before driving in hilly territory!!!

None of these things works real well if you find out the brakes are "gone" after you are already going down the hill. "runouts" on steep grades are fine - (if there are any where you happen to be!) Downshifting may not help, as if you have a lot of weight and the hill is steep enough, it is not going to slow down, just keep it in the lowest gear possible for the longest time- till you think the engine is going to explode from over-revving! If the engine comes all apart all over the road, -- you are then essentially in neutral from there on!! Not all trucks have airbrakes, (they operate by "loosing air"!)

Now if you are dumb enough to start going down a hill knowing that the brakes are bad, -- I suggest you shoot yourself, and keep other people from getting killed along with you!

The only "best thing to do" is to assume that your brakes are going to "break" at any time! Therefore, you start down grades at a moderate speed to begin with! ---That is why they have those signs telling you to "shift down" at the top of the hill!! Note also that they could fail at the next corner or the next stop sign! If you are going too fast you are in just as much trouble as you might be on a hill (just in a shorter distance to travel)! I have been driving for 50 years, (about 5 hundred thousand miles in a truck). have had many brake failures, - but so far not wrecked any cars or trucks , - (but real close several times)! Better to drive a little slower and arrive there in one piece if possible!

The old adage: "hit something cheap" (and soft if possible) applies here!

Start the truck with a low mph. Then if you have problems, most places such as Washington Idaho and Montana have Runaway truck ramps for people with truck problems.
Also, pull over to the side where you have the bumps on the road, it'll slow your car down if you don't press the gas pedal. I suggest getting the truck checked out and fixed if possible. Try downshift too, if nothing else works.

Down shift, shut off motor (leave switch on so you can steer) Find a soft spot to land. If you are going down hill that means somewhere there is an up hill. Use gravity, steer up and embankment. Best bet is to get the brakes fixed.

Down shift, all the way to 1st. Do not stall the engine, if that happens you will lose your power steering until you get it started again. You will also have to hit a curb or other object to get it to a complete stop. Get your brakes fixed, its cheaper than loosing your life! brake pads are only twenty bucks!

Downshift slowly, as too big of a jolt could rip out the transmission.

Snake down the hill to reduce speed. If possible, drive on the opposing shoulder to further reduce speed.

Foot off the gas

Use the gears to keep the truck at a slower speed. Just keep the truck in the lower gears.

Also, go get new breaks put in.

You could try to get it into a lower gear, but if that didnt work and you couldnt find one of those emergency truck ramps on the side of the road, I would bail out and take my chances with the road.

FIRST there is NO EMERGENGY BRAKE ON ANY CAR ! it is a PARKING BRAKE ! if the transmission is fully syncro then downshift as quicklly and smoothly as possible and turnignition off without locking steering colum,if tranny is non -snycro just turn off ignition as you might not get it back into gear and you would just be coasting! you did not say gas or diesel so i must assume this vehicle has no performance retarder(JAKE BRAKE)

Two ideas.....

One, push in the clutch and rub the tires up against the curb and use friction to slow down.

Two, you can downshift and use the engine's own torque to gradually slow the truck down.
