Systems software is like Windows, UNIX, or DOS. They are memory management programs that provide an environment for the other programs to run.
Application software are the programs that you actually use to do things. These can be your internet browser, a word processor, games, etc.
Typically, programmers either specialize in writing the code for just one type of software. This is why you'll see job ads specify whether they are looking for a systems programmer or an applications programmer.
