It's because the Earth tilts, and places north and south of the equator, get the most Sun exposure. Shine a light on a tilted basketball, and you'll see that the sun doesn't strike the equator nearly as much as the tilted portion.

Geography and climate patterns are also factors. Death Valley receives no rain, because of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It's at a cormfortable lattitude, but the geography and the Sun's tilt, make it the world's hottest place.

It's because of the tilt of the earth. The equator receives the most light throughout the year. since the world tilts, that's why we have seasons, winter is when the north/south hemisphere is tilted away from the sun.

If you compare the route of the sun in the sky in summer and winter. The amount of time and the height of the sun is much longer and higher than in the winter.

It has to do with sea level. Colorado and Arizona, for example are very close geographically but as anyone who has been to both will attest, are polar opposites in climate. This is because most of Colorado is well above sea level while most of Arizona is barely above.

The weaker parts of the atmosphere allow more heat to penetrate through and most of them are not located on the equator.

Actually, many spots near the equator are hot. Most deserts are near the equator, and so are many rainforests and jungles.
