(Backstory: a man and his son don't get along at all for years. The man is a workaholic. The son is a rebel. Some emotional event happens, and the son comments about how his father never cared about him.)

Important question --

Dad: Don't you know how much you mean to me?

It's a rhetorical question. The dad doesn't want an answer to it. It's still a question, but its real purpose is to tell the son that the dad loves him, not to find out if the son really didn't know it.

Most rhetorical questions are more important than what the answer is. They're questions which require no answer. If they require no answer, the question is obviously more important.

Your supposition of an equitable question vs.answer value would be so were it not for the values we add to the equation....We ask questions fro reasons of discernment; to wiegh the facts, so to speaks. We have a belief that in having an arrangement of the facts and thier interplay we can become safe and happy ! These motives for asking factual questions are subjective in nature and askew the original question vs. answer value. An example: I learn of medical test results ...contingent on what I believe about the relative validity of the test, about what "normal" parameters are,and what I believe will be the painful consequences( or lack thereof) of such test results ...I determine to begin a greif process or I go on to the next thing to worry about :) The real problems are in my beliefs; that I might be able, by virtue of knowing, to avoid all pain, or to gain all pleasure and security...when truly these are relative and subjective experiences inherent in living. Absolute science is merely a descripion, a schematic, and accounting. Understanding is base to experiencing in the same way doing is base to being (who I am begets what I am ....the reverse is a hollow experience).
To answer your question in a more personal way then : If your girlfriend or boyfriend were to ask you in pubic and in the company of others whether you'd soiled your pants ......Which would be more important to you in that moment...the answer to her/his question, or the fact that she/he asked ? Trust me on this....What I would care about is that she embarrassed me !...whether or not my pants were soiled.

Incidentally, the appropriate answer to that question is ...."You mean today ?"
