Quite honestly, Americans don't know science from their asshole. At the turn of the century, it was thought to be that eradicating social welfare institutions was "scientific" because of the brutish display of bastardized concepts of Darwin's views applied to government. Basically nobody (except those preyed upon) questioned social Darwinism because all the people orchestrating economic policies were at the top of their food chain. It is quite simply what we call "Reaganomics" today.
Anyway, that is just one example of how we completely misunderstand the scientific process. A theory is so ridiculously well-tested and proven that it may as well be a fact. A theory doesn't have to be "proven" (if it is "proven", I can guarantee it is not science and some kind of snake oil) to be accurate. That Ritalin and Prozac you've got your kids on? It only "theoretically" works, but you think drugging your kids up on something a pharmaceutical company dreamed up is okay.
The only reason I can see that Americans do not want to accept the essential foundation of all biological sciences is the same reason 25% of Americans over the age of 40 still think the sun rotates around the Earth. Absolute and utter ignorance.
EDIT: Anybody bringing up Doctor Dino's "proofs" (like the gentleman above indirectly did), you need to read this. All of it.

Honestly. There is no science in creationism. Go ask a legitimate scientist (not Mr. Hovind, whom I've honestly completed a higher level of geological and biological sciences than) about creationism and the best response you can hope for is that perhaps God was responsible for evolution. Somebody submit a proof that is not covered by the link I submitted above.
For example, the gentleman that said the speed of light was slowing down (I'm glad Albert Einstein is dead. He would probably blow your house up.), read this:

Off topic, but the U.S. is not more religious than Canada. They just think they are. The truth is that they are the most barbaric nation on earth, engaging in far, far more military battles than any other country. Does that sound religious to you? They are as religious as terrorists claim they are, only more dangerous and more frightening. After all, they have all the best weapons and don't want anyone else to have them. Religious, indeed!

very little can be said to be certian in the world aside from statements like "I think therefore I am" or "I am being appeared to redly." Ultimately the creationist/intelligent design concepts are possible but the real problem I think is its advocates are pushing it into the wrong theater/context. They are trying to have philosophical ideas taught as science, which is as bad as having science taught as philosophy. They're different realms that use different criteria to interpret the world, and to represent one as the other is a fallacy.
edit: aww, c'mon ratedowns? what for?

i could give you some proofs about how the speed of light is slowing down and used to be much faster, and verifying that the age of the universe (widely accepted as 16 billion years) which we have found out through carbon dating and radioactive decay, is actually on account of light being that much faster, i.e. light's speed decreases at the same rate of radioactive decay. the universe isn't as old as we think it is, light, and therefore our methods of measuring the age of the universe have not been at a constant rate. science is actually proving the 6 day creation. but yeah...to be fair, the evolution believers have beliefs, just like the christians. every bit as genuine. i wouldn't think it fair for either group to get to show only one side of the story. IMO: they're both yet unproven 100%; teach both or none.

first of all this is just a THEORY, yeah yeah with facts that support it and everything. second of all it will never go away because in order to destroy a THEORY you have to prove it wrong, but how can you prove something that doesnt exist wrong, if it doesnt exist!
