The dictionary defines love as a tender affection or attraction for another, as well as a sense of underlying oneness. It defines hate as an intense hostility or aversion usually deriving from fear.

Love and fear (which produces hate) are natural human emotions that develop in all humans beginning at a young age. It is not the emotions themselves which cause problems for people, it is how they chose to act upon the emotion.

They matter because having an understanding of how to effectively deal with these emotions can bring a great sense of pleasure and well being to one's life.

I don't think you're truely capable of hating anyone that you don't or havn't loved. The reason I say that is because the distance between love and hate, is so small, its less than a second or less than a blink of an eye...think about it.

The reason it matters? Once you've loved you'll understand why it matters. You don't have to like it but it will matter.

ST. Thomas says "to love(agape) is to will the good of the other," hatred is sin insofar as it is a lack of love where it ought to be. Love then is not a feeling primarily , but first an act of the will, again, where one wills the good of the other.
THe question matters b/c of if love resides in the will and not primarily in the emotions, then it is possible to love everyone, even our enemies. We dont have to feel love (initially ) for them, all we need to do is to will their good. This is something performed by the will and therefore simply DONE.

Love is wanting the best for the person you love even if its not the best for you. Love is being willing to sacrifice yourself for the person you love. Hate is something that eats at your insides. Its a terrible feeling that can make you feel like an ugly person.

love and hate are opposites and they matter cause we make them matter. if you didnt care about anything, then love and hate wouldnt matter. but since its human nature to care, or don't care, that's why we hate and love.
love is almost like what little kids call like like. like you like like somebody, but love is just more than that.
hate is the total opposite, as in you just really dont like like somebody. hate is just the inverse of love n is created by internal conflicts. you really cant stop hate unless you stop a person from feeling, which is impossible.

Love is a feeling you get when you smile because of something or someone. Hate is when you start frowning and feel unhappy because of something or someone. Why it matters? Because it makes life a lot more dramatic and fun.

There is a very fine line between the two. Love is from God, Hate is the perversion of love.

Love is caring for someone other than yourself and hate seems to be a pretty natural emotion.

Love is the evidence of salvation. And if you really study the word hate you will find that it simply means to dislike someone.

there is this fine line that you walk and things fall on one side or the other. call it what you will but it dos'nt matter because you can love and you can hate the same thing. just don'nt fall off and start hating yourself for what you can not control.
