Cold air will come right through so yes, cover it up. Also you don't want bugs or creatures hiding in it for the winter, so covering it will protect it as well.
Once it's covered, make sure to turn the power off so it doesn't turn on. Better safe than sorry.

If you can't remove your room air conditioner from the window during the winter consider covering it, both inside and out. Besides protecting your air-conditioning unit these covers also help keep cold air from entering your home through the space around the air-conditioner, cutting heating costs.

You know it but not to worry, it's easy. Just take a large trash bag and slip it over then wrap duct tape around it near the window tightly. Then just before summer or when you need to use it again remove the tape and bag. Do the same next winter. Take care.

Not if your heater and a/c are the same unit/on the same thermostat. But if you live alone, you could stop using the ac/heater and use a portable plug in heater. That's usually all I use.

yes if you live where it snows ,and it is only ac. if it is a heat pump no.the best thing to do is use car wax on it .it has automotive paint on it.
