No. If you lose weight with your jaw wired shut, two things will happen. First, you will lose weight too quickly and may have skin hanging that looks worse than being a little overweight. Second, once your jaw is unwired, your eating habits will return to normal and the weight will come back. Look at how many people have had gastric bypass, lose so much weight, and then gain it back because they haven't changed their mindset toward eating and food. The best way to lose weight is to eat a balanced diet with as much fresh food as possible. Processed food and fast food are PACKED with salt, fat, and other ingredients that make you gain weight. Then exercise every day. It doesn't have to be a hard exercise. You can just walk 10 to 15 minutes three times a day or walk for at least 45 minutes straight. Either way will burn calories. When you feel like you can handle it, add weight training three times a week (with never less than one day in between weight workouts). Nothing fancy, find two empty 1-gallon jugs and fill them with water. Use them to life individually or put a sturdy broom between the handles to life together. Just be careful and make sure you secure the jugs with tape or string or something. You don't have to spend a lot of money. And, you don't have to spend a lot of time. You can do little exercises like sitting in a chair and raising and lowering your legs for one minute. Do that every hour. Sit up in a chair and twist back and forth for a full minute. Do that exercise every hour. Every little bit adds up to more calories being burned. Another important point: If you eat too little, your body will think it's starving and hold onto fat as much as it can, so even if you lose 30 pounds by not eatling a lot, as soon as you start eating normally again, your body will store food directly as fat. It's made to do that. So make sure you eat enough food with the right amount of protein, carbohydrates, and, yes, fat, too. Check with your doctor or a nutritionist to make sure what is the right number of calories for you. Good luck. This is what I am doing and I've lost 20 pounds so far and don't have any loose skin hanging. :) I've got about 75 more to go. So I know how hard it is. Hang in there.

Absolutely not. Losing weight is just a matter of proper caloric intake, portion size and exercise. Wiring your jaw shut would deprive you of nutrition you would desperately need, no matter what "supplements" are available. It's just not a natural thing to do, and I consider it very drastic.
As drastic as I considered The Atkins Diet. Eliminating carbohydrates from your diet completely?? Crazy. Carbohydrates are for energy. Sure, they break down into sugars, but if you don't sit on your butt and exercise descently (not obsessively), and watch the portion sizes that you eat, you can eat just about anything. It's all about how much you eat, and how many calories your burn. Cut and dried.
Please, don't have your jaw wired shut.

I broke my jaw in bicycle accident and my jaw was wired shut for 6 weeks. In order to have liquid intake, they need to pull out a tooth or two so you can drink. This was not a problem for me, since my accident also knocked out my 4 front upper teeth.

You should also know that they don't really wire it shut. They wire hooks around your upper teeth and your lower teeth and tie them together with rubber bands. This is so you don't choke to death in the event you need to vomit. The rubber bands can be broken or torn off easily to allow for this unpleasant possibility.

The wires and hooks tear your gums and hurt like hell. When you sneeze the pressure can burst little capillaries in your eyes. No permanent damage, but not pleasant to see or experience.

You can't clean the back of your teeth and bacteria grow and you get bad breath. And tooth decay. You can't floss. I never had a cavity prior to breaking my jaw. This accident was many years ago. Now I have fillings in almost every tooth.

When they finally take out the wires, your gums are so unhealthy and abused, they look (and feel) like raw hamburger. Your breath smells like a sewer. Your jaw aches because the muscles have atrophied from lack of use. This causes you to slur your speech for a few days until you build up your muscle strength again.

I've been overweight all my life. I wanted to take advantage of the accident to loose weight during this forced procedure, but the doctors told me that my body needed the nutrition and would not allow me to reduce my calories. This meant that I had to eat high calorie shakes and ground up soupy meat. I lost about 15 pounds anyway.

I gained it all back within 2 months of getting the wires out.

This is not a weight loss method I would recommend to anyone. Please. There are a lot of dumb things us fat people do to loose weight. Whatever you do, don't do this.

I've lost 5 kilos in my first week. It's my 10th day and I have included salad with some protein (eg. egg/ lean chicken) as you suggested. After 4 years of trying, the fat is finally coming off. It truly feels like magic!

Get started today!

You wouldn't maintain that 30lb weight loss. That only happens if you change your eating & exercising habits.

I have had my jaw wired shut for 6 weeks. It's not fun and it wouldn't be worth it for temporary weight loss.

Not for 30 but I would do it if it guaranteed over 50.

No, if it guaranteed a bigger loss like 75 pounds or more to some very overweight people then yes, more than likely I would.
