The previous answers dont really answer your question. The body needs oxygen because oxygen is involved in the last steps of ATP synthesis. ATP is a molecule is all of the body's cells that provide the cell with energy to carry out its tasks. One of the most important of these is a pump on the cell surface that regulates the concentration of molecules in the cell. Without ATP, therefore, the cells would die. Without cells, the basic building block of tissues and organs, the body itself cannot function. Thus, oxygen is vital to make this ATP.

Those 'oxygen enriched water' machines a scam. They are a way to take money off stupid people. No, the human body can not absorb the oxygen present in water. Well, that's not quite true. You could absorb the oxygen in water if you breathed it in. Then you would drown. But if you are just drinking the water or bathing in it you can never absorb the oxygen in it.

NONE of the previous get to the heart of the question.

The body needs oxygen because it is an internal combustion engine. It takes in organic matter plus oxygen, oxidizes the organic matter creating CO2 and H20, and the resulting energy is used for locomotion and all the other attendant heat producing activities of the body

At the chemical level, cellular respiration releases all these nasty H ions that if allowed to accumulate, the cell would die from acidity.
Oxygen accepts and combines with the H ions to form H2O (water), which we exhale. This is a bit oversimplified but is basically why we need O2.

Would suck if it needed helium. Obviously humans would never have made it if we needed to breath helium.

Hence, all living things need the gasses in the air to survive.
