Because it's the United States of America, and our citizens are called Americans - other countries' citizens are called something else, but not Americans.

I know what you're saying. I just started at this school in Portland, and it has a sizeable group of Canadian students. During one of the orientation talks, someone referred to Americans, and one of the Canadian Students asked if they meant people living in America, and the first person just said, "Whatever" - even though it was a legitimate question.
I think there're two kind of problems. The first is that US people are completely accustomed to calling themselves "Americans" and don't see that there are actually two entire continents of Americans. The second is, what else do you call us? I know of one group, called RC, that decided it was actually oppressive for US people to call themselves Americans, so they started using the term USers, which is a little awkward.

When you ask a mexican what nationality he is he will answer "Mexicano" when you ask a man from canada what nationality he is he will say canadian, french or something along those lines. If you ask a man from brazil (south america) he will say he is brazilian. so in theory we are the only americans you moron. Now if you ask a person of foriegn decent what nationality I am...no matter where they are from the #1 answer will be AMERICAN. So its not just us that call oursleves that.

its because of the "of America" part in the countries name, but really if you pay attention it clearly says, UNITED STATES OF america, of america meaning of the american continent. Its a usual cultural mistake, but then again it would be hard saying UNITED STATIAN

We have already heard of Canada AND Mexico, thank you very much!

Grow a BRAIN, and find some other mindless, meaningless thing to gripe about!

As my ex used to say, "A change is as good as a rest!"
