It stood for "Schutzstaffel" (not sure about spelling) and it comprised the elite enforcers of Nazi Germany, including the Gestapo (a German acronym for "Secret State Police") and they committed most of the war crimes that Nazi Germany perpetrated.

The name has been defined in other posts, and it was composed of multiple types of units with different purposes, here is a general breakdown:
GESTAPO: GeheimSTaatPOlizei Secret State Police
SD: Sicher Dienst - Internal security and intelligence service
Waffen SS: the 'fighting' SS - tanks infantry the whole thing.
There were of course many different units that served the National Socialist regime in a number oppressive ways. Included with these are those that organized and enacted the Holocaust.
The SS (and its different branches) had a complicated rank hierarchy which was meant to match the rankes of the german military. It is likely that had the Nazis won the Second World War, the German Army would likely have been replaced with a larger more robust SS.

Actually SS is an abbreviation for Schutz Staffel. After eliminating the SA (look that on up) in the night of long knives, became Hitlers bodyguards. After being elected chancellor( yes the butthole was elected) the SS became the highest of the high in NAZI military command.

It was the police force organized by the Nazis after they invaded countries.

Members of the SS participated in raids of their enemies, arrested Jews and other "subhumans", enforced the new laws and restrictions, etc.

They were a combination of German Nazis and the Nazi sympathizers in the occupied territories.

SS stands for Schutz Staffel (German for security staff) . They were the ones who replaced the SA (Sturm Abteilung) & were the core of the Nazi party.

Their military arm was the Waffen SS whose uniform were black instead of field grey (feldgrau) & whose insignia included the totenkopf (death head)

Look it up on the Web to learn more about this elite corps that worked closely with Hitler to kill millions of innocent people--Jews, Catholics, disabled, homosexuals, people opposed to genocide...people just like you.

First they came for the Communists,
and I didn’t speak up,
because I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak up,
because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up,
because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me,
and by that time there was no one
left to speak up for me.
