As others have stated, if everything is working okay with the turn signals, they will normally shut off. But if they don't after making a complete turn, there is something broken inside the steering column. The older cars had a plastice piece with 2 springs that controlled it. Sometimes one or both of those springs would break, but even if all 3 pieces were broken, it would be a very cheap fix if you are mechanically inclined and have some simple inexpensive tools to do the job.
But with the newer cars, and even quite a few of the older ones now, there is a multi-function switch that controls not only the turn signals turning on and off, but also the brights for the headlights, and most times the emergency blinkers as well.
And the cost and ease of fixing it if you are mechanically inclined? Anywhere from $75- $150 for most cars. But if someone else has to replace it for you? Much more expensive because of labor rates!

What I'd like to see is an automatic on-switch on a signal, that turns it on just before the driver turns! Have it hooked up to the driver's brain (if they ahve one) so that the other drivers actualy know where they're going! The only thing that bugs me more is perpetual blinkers, is people who don't use them at all!!!

They do if they are working properly. As soon as a stearing wheel is turned in the opposite direction of the turn when straitening the car out, the signal light should go off, unless it was turned on and no turn was made.

as ROB O said the dodge vehicles will sound a alarm after a mile of traveling in a straight line indicating that the turn signal is still active.

Some newer vehicles come with a warning when you leave your signal on for too long.

If everything works right, it should cancel itself unless you don't turn the steering wheel far enough left or right depending which way you are turning.
