First you could uninstall Real player then windows would be forced to ask you what to open things with. Second (assuming you have XP) you could right click on a media file and then click on Open with... (if you have the option click on "choose program") then check the box below that says "always use this program" and it will from then on for all programs with that extension.

On Realplayer,
-Go to Tools, then go to Preferences.
-Under 'Category', expand Content (click the + symbol. If it's a - symbol, then just follow the next step.)
-Click "Manually configure media types For RealPlayer". (It may already be selected). Click the 'Select' button.
-Select which formats you want RealPlayer to play. It would probably be best to leave the formats in the section "RealAudio and RealVideo" to RealPlayer, unless you know you have something else that can play these.
If it's DVD's you're trying to watch, make sure anything under the DVD section is unchecked.
-Click Ok, Click Ok

You may need to load up the program you want to play these files in next. This would cause it to check and see that these formats need a player, and assign itself. If it doesn't, you may need to follow a similar process with this program as you did with RealPlayer.

If you're running Windows XP, another solution would be to right-click the file you want to play, move your cursor to "Open With", and Windows will give you a short list of programs it thinks could play the file.
Clicking "Choose Program" will give you a much longer list of programs, but most of these will probably not be able to play the file, so be sure you click the program you want. In this menu, you can also click "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" to do just that. However, if RealPlayer is still set to try to open this file (what the first half of this post is about), the next time you open RealPlayer, it will attempt to re-associate itself with the file type.

There are actually two ways to do this.

The easiest way(if you want to use windows media player) is to open Windows Media Player (usually found in Start->All Programs), then click Tools->Options. Click the File Types tab and check any file types that you want to open with Windows Media Player(movies are usually .mpg, .mpeg, .avi)

The hard way(if you want to use any other player) is to open any folder, then select Tools->Folder Options, then click the File Types tab, find each file type in the list you want to have open with a different program, and then click Change. Find the program you want to file to open with each time and then click OK.

Good Luck!

Easiest way: Rt-click on the file - hit Open With (You may have to hold the shift key when rt-clicking to see it) - hit Select Program from list - find the program you want to use (you may have to browse for it) and ensure that the 'Always use this Program' box is checked.

You can also look under Tools/Folder Options/File Types or hack the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT section of the Registry...

you must have your real player set up as universal player there's two options you select your favorite player for example windows media player than you go to options search for media types and select them all and apply or you can go to real player, tools, prefences, content, media types, options, and deselect both those that are checked.
