Here is a list of what I think are some great gifts:
gift card to a sports store that he likes
season pass to a favorite team of his
a nice picnic
treat him to dinner
a ticket to a concert
you could take him to his favorite store and let hime pick out something
if you two are really close, then you could try something like a picnic or treat him to dinner.

Gift cards let them get what they want, but aren't so meaningful..... I would do a little of both, something you can't go wrong with (a gift card to a place he shops a lot), and tuck it inside a card personally made by you (doesn't look to girly though) with a pic of you and him on the front. He'll appreciate the gift card because he can use it, and the card as a keepsake.

A mix CD of his favorite music. That's what my friends and I usually give each other for Christmas. Or if he likes comic books like manga or something, get him a copy of one that he wants to read but hasn't got yet.
Just make sure it is something that pertains to him. A jacket or tickets to a game aren't personal because they are so typical and easy to get. Mixing a CD requires work to complete, and also needs lots to details to pick it all out. Nothing shows more care than something you really had to listen to him about and remember later.

A nice gold Italian bracelet, a good looking black leather coat from like Wilsons leather. If your on a budget a nice bottle of Cologne. If he's geeky, a gift card to Best Buy.
