Hyper referrs to more and Hypo is less. Think of it like this: If you have hypo thermia your body is too cold and with hypertermia it is too warm. I am sorry but I can't remember iso- I think it may be the happy medium.

Isotonic solutions have the same osmolality of red blood cells so if you infuse them into the blood stream it doesn't change the cell at all. The red blood cells remain donut shaped. (Normal Saline and Latated Ringer are these.)

Hypotonic solutions have a lower osmolality than red blood cells, so the solution moves into the cells making them fatter or more spherical. This is good when you have something like a sickle cell crisis and the cells are funny shaped.

Hypertonic solutions draw water out of the cells because they have a higher osmolality. This makes the cells flatter because they lose fluid. This is good when a person has a lot of swelling, especially when it involves brain swelling.

Good luck with the homework....I remember those days well!

Hypo-tonic Solutions puts more water into the cell

Hyper-tonic Solutions takes out the water

Isotonic Solutions stays the same

Hypotonic is over hydrated; so the cells would swell, perhaps burst. Hypertonic is under hydrated; so the cells crenelate. Isotonic is the proper hydration level. This is due to the osmotic pressure of the solution the cells find themselves in. NaCl would set up a gradient, for instance, that would cause water to flow out of the cell; hypertonic crenelation resulting.

In hypotonic solutions, fluid moves INTO cells and they can burst. In hypertonic, fluid moves OUT of cells, causing them to shrink. Isotonic is a balance where fluid can move in and out of the cells and nature does its job.
