Call me a dumb blonde but I couldn't get a few things while watching Girl Interrupted, Great movie though!

1. Was this based on a true story or a true story that was exaggerated a bit?
2. Why was Lisa admitted to the hospital?
3. If Savannah(Winona Ryder) wasn't crazy or there was nothing wrong with her then why in the deleted scenes it shows her hallucinating?
4. So in the 60s if all you wanted to do was write you were considered mentally ill?
5. Was there anything wrong with Savannah(Winona Ryder) really?

Thanks!

1) yes it's a true story, Susanna Kayson wrote a book which the movie is based on

2) Lisa is a sociopath

3) she was questionably diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and probably had depression. She may have taken drugs that cause hallucinations... i'm not sure

4) mental illness in the 60s was very misunderstood. She wasn't only writing, she was suicidal and struggling with life and so she was institutionalized. Today, she would have been send to a therapist

5) i think probably at most depression. She was more or less a typically depressed teen, but she was misdiagnosed and treated.

1. This is based on a true story. There is a book that fills in a lot of the blanks in the movie story-line - same title by Susanna Kaysen.
2. Lisa was a sociopath.
3. Could have been some of the drugs she may have used.
4. It's not that she was considered mentally ill just for wanting to write, it was that most people thought there were better careers out there for a woman and she swallowed pills and vodka in an apparent suicide attempt. Several things led to all of this.
5. I don't believe there was anything wrong with Susanna by today's standards, she was fairly progressive for her time (I think) and that made people scared.

Get the book and read it. It may help - it does jump around a bit though so you may have to go through it a couple times.

1. True story, Based on writer Susanna Kaysen's account of her 18-month stay at a mental hospital in the 1960s.
2. Lisa is a sociopath they don't have a conscience, can't feel remorse, they do things without thinking about the consequence, there is no cure (look at the link below).
3. Savanah was impulsive and took drugs, her ideas might have also seemed like hallucinating to others.
4. In the 60s mental health wasn't understood as well as it is today.
5. Savannah had borderline personality disorder, she would do things on impulse and had many other symptoms, she also tried to commit suicide so they thought she might have depression. (link below)

Hello, Great film hey?Yeah I loved it. I'm not sure about Lisa, think she had been in and out for a long time, anorexia definitely but I don't know what else. Not sure about how true it is but yeah I think there was something 'wrong' with her, but she had insight into it and therefore had a choice of what to do about it - get help or change - whereas some of the other girls seemed to be happy with their identity of being ill. Not sure if that helps! Ruthy

Not a true story
Lisa was a troubled youth with a drug problem
Susanna wasn't crazy but after being locked up she started having problems with hallucinating
Susanna's parents thought there was something wrong with her
