The first time you heard the story of Beowulf, how did you picture Grendel?
I pictured him as a dragon type creature, but just watched the movie Beowulf and Grendel and they have him being a troll.
What was your perception of Grendel??

As something a bit like a dragon, except more like a monstrous mammal, not a reptile. Maybe more bearlike except much bigger and much more horrifying. I never tried to imagine him in detail, because I thought he was scarier if left somewhat mysterious, and I think the poets must have thought the same way about it, because they avoided describing him clearly. I was surprised to see him portrayed as a troll. I would rather think of him as a dragon than a troll, but I guess it's OK for a movie.

I also pictured him as a dragon-like medeviel monster. By the way, did you hear they are making a movie version of it with Crispin Glover as Grendel and Angelina Jolie as Grendel's mom? Its true!

Coming off of your question, I pictured Grendel as a more 'troll-like' creature than a dragon.

I like to imagine he looks like the Street Fighter Blanka. Green all over, sharp teeth.

Lucky for Beowulf that Grendel didn't have Blanka's electrocution powers -- our hero wouldn't have been able to hold on to Grendel for more than one second without being zapped. ;)

I got a dragon vibe, too. The poem mentions scales, as I recall. But movies ruin everything.

I agree. I always imagined him as a dragon-like creature.

That's what I imagined too. Don't you hate it when they do that? I think personally, that it is fun to be able to perceive characters of books your own way. Movies are okay, but they mess it up that way.
