I don't think there is just one appropriate career for a person, but many possible paths.
I think when you're in high school, your head gets full of all sorts of suggestions from well-meaning counselors and parents, and you can get pretty confused from all that.
Think back to when you were a kid playing games, and if you ever imagined yourself doing something that made you just feel good and kind of excited... that will give you a hint as to what you may have been intended to do.
Sometimes, we end up doing what is available-- what we can find and fit into most easily. As John Lennon's song says, "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans." ("Beautiful Boy")
Eventually you get to a point where you can't see yourself starting over again. Even though you may not love your job, you feel comfortable with the work, and you don't hate it. I guess that's when you know you are in your life career. It isn't always that easy to face that fact.

If you feel challenged but not overwhelmed, if at the end of the day you feel as though you have accomplished something worthwhile, if you feel that even if you won the lottery, you would still want to continue working at that job, you have chosen the right career.

It would be gratifying to have a career where you enjoyed going to work, had a good working relationship with your peers and supervisor, felt you were making a meaningful contibution to the company you worked for and when you went home you looked forward to what tomorrow would bring.
Whatta bunch of crap! Those jobs don't exist.

When you follow your heart and not your brain. When you love what you do. When you would work for free. When you can wake up every morning and be excited to go to work.
