People want to believe there is more to "life" than what it is. But there is no evidence that we "move on", become "reborn" ad nausem. We are a collection of atoms that simply break down when we die. Thats it. Thats all. Just because we are a collection of atoms that are self aware, doesnt mean squat. We're still just a bunch of atoms, waiting to break down.

How can they not? Closed thinking on this subject doesn't change the fact that souls are the part that survive, when this earth time lesson is over. Can you prove there is no soul? Then you are proving a negative, and in the end will discover there are more questions than answers if you dare to explore the subject. Who says there is no soul? Look down through history in dire times. When people had nothing left but their own souls. One another reaching out to others. Love is what it is about. Sharing love between people has happened again and again to be the one link between survival and dying. That's soul connection. Surely you can't live your life acknowledging only that which can be seen or heard......how do you answer the ties between people who love one another? Mother and child. Deep abiding friendship. Husband and wife. The connections between all who love. Those connections that alert each other that the other one is in pain, in need, try to call and find that the other one was dialing our number. Can you explain the seeming "dead" and certainly ugly rose bush in the winter. And yet every spring the transformation into a beautiful rose, soft and velvety, wondrous aroma that has inspired many perfunes. And the wonders of the earth: the oceans, the mountains, the survival of mankind despite the pollution, the abuse, crime, hatred in the name of God. And yet people continue to reach out to one another.
Do things need to be scientifically proven before they exist? Do you really need to hold something in your hand before you believe it exists? If so, consider what you are missing. Is this what you really need? Things unseen or unheard: there are countless wonders you wil miss....

I think it's because it offers a sense of absolution in a reality where nothing is certain. It's comforting to some. Faith is a great thing for those who have it, but, for others (like me), I didn't actually start enjoying my life until I admitted that I was not born with the ability to believe in a higher power, or in an afterlife. I found it, and the time devoted to studying it and trying to explain it and to understand it to be a hinderance to an otherwise pleasant life.

I've got nothing against those who believe, at all, and I can generally see why or how people believe, but, I have no desire to ever go back to trying to make it work for me.

I suspect many people believe in souls because they have been told in a convincing way that there is such a thing, which is the same reason most of us believe in atoms, black holes, and evolution. I think, though, that many people believe because they've actually experienced their own soul, or a heaven, or a hell.

...and this "there is no soul" statement is based on what? Even beyond ghost sightings, there's oodles of near death experiences wherein the survivor came back with information that could simply not be attained were they just a collection of atoms. I'm not speaking of tunnels of light stories, but conversations they listened in on that occurred outside the OR or in one case I read, knowledge of some shoes that were sitting on the hospital roof.

Long before we understood electricity, it existed. If you don't believe in something because you can't see it, stop breathing imaginary air. Simply because we haven't developed the means to measure, quantify, or grasp something does not mean it doesn't exist.

And finally, realize this: It is impossible to prove that something does not exist.

Are you saying this because you think you have to do something to have a good after life. OK I was where you are about 2 months ago, but then I started thinking where did humans come from?? Apes, them... Evolution,... then, bacteria, then, heat source, then maybe an impact of some sort,.... but where did the rock come from, and the infinite galaxies. Where? there must be someone who created, it can't just be. So if there is a creator then they must care, I have kids and I can't just not care, It may not be as involved as everyone thinks though maybe we are just set up like cause and effect.

That isnt a question, just you stating your arrogant ignorance. You have a soul, you know deep down that you do, and there is no way you can be sure that there IS'NT a hell or a Heaven.

The real question is how can you NOT believe in things like souls or heaven or hell or God or anything? How can you believe that we as humans just happened by "chance"? That we're lucky for evolution to be nice and make humans out of monkeys? If you don't believe in anything, then what's the point? What's the point in even living? Is it to be "successful" or "the best of what we can be"? Face it. Our lives are like breaths in cold air. We're there for a second, then vanish. People may remember you, but those memories will also soon vanish.

People say that natural selection is the cause for our drives for success. "If we are successful, we increase our chances of survival, so our genes get carried on" right? Then how do you explain our drive for morality, for religion, for any beliefs at all? Religious Christians often give up everything they have, to glorify God, and are often martyred because of it. But wait. That completely goes against natural selection, doesn't it?

No, it's not natural selecion that drives us. It's satisfaction that drives us. We are never satisfied. We have a huge, infinite hole in our hearts that we are constantly trying to fill. We sometimes fill it with money or power or success. Other times we fill it with drugs and sex and sin. Yet no matter what we do, we're never satisfied. We may feel satisfied, if only for a second, but then we're left with a hole that seems even bigger than before. We were made to have a drive for satisfaction. But why? Because we were also made to glorify Jesus Christ. The Bible teaches that He is most glorifed when we are most satisfied in Him. We can only be truly satisfied if we glorify Him. I think King Solomon puts it very nicely in Ecclesiastes chapter 2.

Ecclesiastes 2:17-26
17 So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. 18 I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me. 19 And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have control over all the work into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless. 20 So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun. 21 For a man may do his work with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then he must leave all he owns to someone who has not worked for it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune. 22 What does a man get for all the toil and anxious striving with which he labors under the sun? 23 All his days his work is pain and grief; even at night his mind does not rest. This too is meaningless. 24 A man can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in his work. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, 25 for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? 26 To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind

It's obvious. It's obvious in nature, in the infinitely awesome universe, in our own human nature. There is a God out there, and I will always follow Him.
