If you have a c/s under general anesthesia (knocked out), it's best if you have an empty tummy.

Some caregivers DO allow mothers to eat and drink in labor. Midwives encourage it. I ate and drank whatever I wanted in all three of my labors.

Doctors give women ice when they are in labor to keep hydrating them. They have an IV for hydration, but sometimes your mouth will get really dry and your throat gets scratchy, thus the ice will help. A lot of hospitals will allow sugarfree lollipops, but they have to be sugarfree or they will just make your mouth drier.

In most hospitals they don't allow laboring women to eat because if they have to have a c-section, their stomachs would have to be pumped to get food and beverages out before they are sedated. If they don't pump your stomach before hand (only if you have had something to eat) there is a high risk of dry heaving and vomiting.

I ate food during my deliveries, chicken noodle soup, fruit popsicles and gatoraid. I delivered both of my children in a birthing center au natural * No pain meds or anything* and I now have 2 healthy boys, a 1 1/2 year old and a 2 1/2 year old.

Women are given ice chips during labor and sometimes popcicles because they are not allowed to eat anything else. This is done as a precaution to prevent any complications should a C-section need to be preformed. It's also helpful to have an empty stomach as it's not uncommon to throw up during delivery.

when you are in labor, your body completely shuts off your digestive system... so anything you eat or drink will come right back up. However, women who eat ice in labor can't quickly drink or eat it, so it doesn't go in the digestive system (unless you eat a ton really quick). Instead, your body just absorbs the little bit of water from the ice to prevent dehydration and you don't throw up!

I didnt have any ice, LOL.
No it doesnt help progress labor or anything.
I think its just to keep women hydrated and cool during the transitioning phases of labor. I could be wrong though.

It keeps you hydrated and feeling full. You cannot eat during labor incase something happens and you have to have a csection. They have to go through the stomach and having food in there could cause problems.

This helps keep the woman hydrated while in labor. Eating can cause you to reject (vomit) and complicate your delivery. The doctor did let me eat during my first labor... I didn't do it again during my 2nd, and 3rd. Stick to the ice chips. :-)

They will give you ice to eat because you are not aloud to eat or drink anything during labor. You will be very dry and thirsty . That is why they say to pack lip balm aswell cause your mouth is dry

The danger of eating and drinking in labor is an old myth. Risk of aspiration is extremely low. You're more likely to aspirate due to use of narcotics, and you hardly see doctors banning narcotic use in labor. It's nonsensical for a dozen other reasons. For explanation and sources from the medical literature, see Henci Goer's "The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth". http://www.hencigoer.com/betterbirth/toc/

you are not supposed to eat while in labor, but you need to stay hydrated. The ice chips control how much liquid you get.
