to speed up your computer you need ram and a pretty good processor. adding more memory to a computer with little ram and a bad processor will SLOW down your computer.

To expand on a couple of the answers you have already received.

Yes, adding RAM can speed up a computer, but only if you haven't already placed in the "Recommended" amount of RAM.

EX: Windows XP says you can run it on 128 MB RAM, but it will run slowly, sluggishly and painfully hesitate. 256 MB helps a bit, but it will still run slow and sluggish. With 512 MB, it XP will run as it should. If you double the RAM to 1024, XP will run like a top. This is true for any CPU recommended for XP from PIII to P4 duo-core 64-bit.

This means that a system with a 500 MHz CPU with 1024 RAM will run about the same as a 1.3 GHz CPU with the same amount of RAM if you are only using Internet Browsers, Office products and other lesser programs.

But, once you exceed the 1024 MB RAM, the increase of speed will be negligible unless you are a heavy gamer or using programs that uses a great bit of processing power. That is when you need RAM greater than 1024 MB.

Yes it will make software and programs run faster But the net surfing will not change...that relies on you connection speed. But if you do add more memory Its best to replace the card you have in already or the card you add has to be the same brand...exanlpe of what i do...I had 512 card in a pc I wanted to move up ta a gig. I bought a 1gig card compatible with my machine and pulled out the 512. Now if i want to up it more i just buy the same card as the firt gig and I will know they will work together.
Kingstone memory has a great compatability char on there site and you can get great prices at newegg.com

It all depends what kind of speed you are looking for. If you already have a lot of RAM in there already, then no. If you are looking to speed up on games, then look at replacing your Video Card. If you want to speed up your performance online, consider a faster connection and keep your machine running smoothly with an Anti clutter program which deletes unwanted files and frees up resources.

Yeah, but there are maintenance programs that will do even more - some free - some charge for it. Regular maintenance keeps mine speedy. Use these, and see how it goes -

1. Get AVG anti-virus - free from grisoft.com. Then, IMPORTANT, get rid of all the McAffe, Norton, etc. crap on your machine. It's slowin' you down!

2. See if you can get rid of all of the AOL programs that are on your machine.

3. AdAware anti adware program - free. Just install it and forget about it.

4. CodeStuff Starter - free. Use this to clean up your Startup schedule and to close down non-essential programs.

5. SpyBot Search & Destroy - free anti spyware program.

6. Go to pcpitstop.com, free - register and get your machine checked online in 5 minutes to locate other problems - they fix 'em free, too, in most cases.

7. Spend $30 for Registry Mechanic. If you don't have a registry repair program, you have hundreds of problems that can be fixed quickly.

Do these 7 things and stop worrying about more memory. Your machine will be faster than ever.

i suggest having at least 1gb of memory on you pc you can go higher of course but most hi tech games and progams ask for that much. some even less or more all depends on how you use your computer applications wise.
