I had to wipe-out my computer earlier and now I can't get the speakers to work. They are plugged in to the right slot and they don't use batteries. Can you please tell me how to fix this though?

you are probably using On-board sound. That means you need the driver for the motherboards audio.this can be found on your disc you got for your computer or do a search on google for the motherboard name, and when you find the site.put the number of the motherboard in the search and it will give you the drivers. I recommend downloading and installing ALL motherboard drivers from internet or install from disk. This will fix your problem.

You may need to install the correct Sound drivers. You didn't mention if you are using a sound card or onboard sound. A sound card takes up a slot, onboard has the sound jacks near the other input ports in the back of the computer.

You have 3 options to install the sound drivers.

1) Let Windows find the correct drivers (sometimes this will work).

2) Find the CD that came with the Sound Card or the Motherboard. ALL motherboards come with a CD to install certain functions that Windows may not have.

3) Get the drivers from the Internet. This will mostly work easily on sound cards that uses a slot. Onboard sound usually can provide a diffecult search to find the correct drivers. As another mentioned, do a google on the Mobo in question to find more info.

For instance: I had a motherboard that was by xyz company with an AWARD bios. But the company that made the MoBo was in Asia. AWARD didn't have the correct BIOS drivers, but the company website that produced the MoBo did. Each company changes some of the parameters of the BIOS for their specific use, so AWARD didn't have the drivers that company used. This can also apply to onboard sound devices.

There are 3rd party companies that can find the exact drivers you need, but they usually charge a fee.

If you have DirecX, try the DirecX program. It may help you find out what company that made the MoBo.

Gee, I just had the same problem yesterday after re-installing XP. Tried this fix, it worked. I went to my motherboard manufacturer website and downloaded a SIS 7012 Audio Driver and hit the setup.exe to setup the driver (did not find the driver in Program Files though, probably conflict with the C-Media). Then go to Add Remove Program in Control Panel and deleted the C-Media WDM Driver. Went back into Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager and right click on the AC 97 Device with yellow exclamation mark and hit uninstall. Went back to Program Files in C Drive and make sure that C-Media is completely deleted.

Did a reboot. On re-start a dialog box pop up to say "Error loading cmicnfg.cpl. The specified module could not be found." Hit OK and system started to find new hardware, Multimedia Audio Controller, found SIS 7012 Driver. And voila everything back to normal.

Being frustrated for a day and searching through so many forums online without a fix, I thought there must be some people out there who are equally frustrated. Hope this help.

I'm adding a fix for the "error loading cmicnfg.cpl" should this error pop up during start up. Go ahead and do the deletion of -cmaudio- from the registry. Click Start, Run, type in "regedit", no quotes and delete the -cmaudio- string at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE then Software then Microsoft then Windows then CurrentVersion then Run. Right click on the cmaudio at the right panel and delete. This makes it so it will not run on startup and try to find the cpl file that was deleted during the uninstall.

If your computer hangs or reboots while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software. This problem can be solved by uninstalling new softwares, updating device drivers and making minor configuration changes. Detailed instructions at http://tinyurl.com/yk5zpr

Check the hardware drivers first in:
settings->controlpanel->system ->hardware ->device manager
(for xp)
look for yellow question marks. look for your sound card.
if there are no yellow quesiton marks and you see your sound card then you have installed windows ok.. else you have not.

for drivers .. look on your sound card or the computer manufcature's web site .. for example Dell HP IBM all have web sites which alow downloading of drivers.

check to see if volume is muted
control panel sounds
plunk around in there

and also check to see if the volume is muted or toaned down.

good luck

Based on what you are saying. It's tough to determine what the predicament is. You didn't say whether or not you're utilizing High pace or dial or wi-fi. If you're utilizing a wi-fi web, it might be sign barrier predicament. If you're utilizing High pace, it might be adware predicament, if dial up, might be bandwidth predicament. If you have been utilizing you laptop good enough earlier than. I do not suppose it is laptop predicament. Modem vigor surge predicament may be feasible.

You need to install the drivers of your speaker! If you have a disc for it, install it! Right-click My Coputer, go to Properties, and Go to hardware, click the Device Manager button! Look for the sound and install the driver!

It's possible that you deleted a driver needed by your speakers. If you have a cd-rom for them, try reinstalling the driver. Or go to microsoft update, they might have one there. Or go to the manufactures website to search for a dirver.
