The purpose of thought is to plan our actions in advance in accordance with the perception of our intellect/conscience/right&wrong. thinking over past actions/reactions to actions helps us learn.
The source of every voluntary action is thought;but only if you are consciously aware of your thought process.

Thought is a memory, it is the record in the brain about the experience.
Thoughts are like books in the library that are just waiting for you to read again.
If there is no thought you cannot remember your way home, or might forgot your family.
Thought is a necessity in our interactions with everyone and everything.
Without thoughts we are like animals roaming around that just depend on instinct.
In other words, the purpose of thought is to be recalled when needed.
It is the product of our thinking ( we are the thinking mind ).

Purpose has nothing to do with it. If you stop to consider it, thoughts are simply there; but, sure, if they have a purpose, it's to guide people through life, to determine the "Top Dogs" and the "Mutts" (I use these because I'm a wolf person, not to offend anyone). But, no reason other than that...but that's pretty much a reason by itself.

It allows us to decide what we believe in and why. It also gives us freedom to explore our own minds and escape from the world. The vortex of thought is dangerous, and it makes us stronger. Never spend too much time in there, or your common sense will get sucked into oblivion. It's still good to exercise freedom of thought, though. People who don't think for themselves are some the most boring people I've ever met. Allowing yourself to truly think is the beginning of the process that makes you an individual. It's a hard road, but well worth it.

A better question is this: what is the purpose of your question?

The purpose of thought is so major that one little blurb cant tell you all of it. You have to be able to excape the harsh realities of life; you need to be able to think of possibiliities and consequences; You think to feel love and pain; you need to think to keep your thoughts straight; YOu need to be able to think to take direction in your life; You need thoughts to keep sane!

There is none. We do it because we can, and for no better reason. Those who are smart do it much more than the others, granted, but all the same, we need not think. We need not grow as a people. We need not do anything but die.
