I would expect that since the moon is full every 28 days, then that became a "month". Then that would equate to about 13 months. And for whatever reason, it became 12

well, the "month" is based on the lunar cycle, the time it takes for the moon to go through all its phases

the "year" is based on the earth's orbit around the sun

so, no matter what, there are always going to be close to, but not exactly, 12 lunar cycles, per earth orbit

because it is not an exact match and because our calendar underwent some odd political manipulation, we no longer have calendar months directly associated with the lunar cycles

it wouldn't work that well if the months moved through the year and we sometimes had december in the summer so they tied the months down as pieces of the earth-orbit year and disconnected them from their lunar cycle origin

The year was not always 12 months. In ancient Rome there were only 10 months. September, October, November, and December were the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th months. Their names come from the Latin numbers 7, 8, 9 and 10.

In Chinese lunar calendar, a year may contain either 12 or 13 months. The extra one month is called "leap month." There are 7 leap months in a 19-year cycle.

jacinalda... is right. Sept for september is 7. oct for October is 8, nov for November is 9 and dec for December is ten. Of course, these are the Latin prefixes because it was the Roman calendar that was originally 10 months.

The calendar we use was developed by Pope Gregory in the Middle Ages. Before that there was the Roman calender. And, of course, other cultures have their calenders (Hebrew, Chinese, etc). So, it really depends which one you are referring to, since they don't all have the same origin.

It is arbitrary. I guess once there were 10 months, because sept in september means "seven", even though september is the ninth month.
