Sudoku - a puzzle consisting of a 3-by-3 grid of nine squares, each of which is similarly divided into nine smaller squares, some containing a number. The aim is to fill in numerals from 1 to 9 so that every horizontal and vertical line and every large 3-by-3 square contains only one instance of each number; also written sudoku

Sudoku puzzles have actually been around since 1979. I remember solving some in Games magazine back in the 1980s, although the magazine called them something else.
Contrary to what many people think, they were NOT invented in Japan, although the Japanese can certainly take credit for giving the puzzles their popularity. (You can't create crossword puzzles in Japanese, so a different kind of puzzle had to catch on, I suppose.) Their invention is credited to Howard Garnes, a freelance puzzle constructor, who was likely inspired by the Latin squares of the great mathematician Leonard Euler.

The puzzle is most often a 9×9 grid, made up of 3 × 3 subgrids called "regions" (other terms include "boxes", "blocks", and the like when referring to the standard variation). Some cells already contain numbers, known as "givens" (or "clues"). The goal is to fill in the empty cells, one number in each, so that each column, row, and region contains the numbers 1 – 9 exactly once. Each number in the solution therefore occurs only once in each of three "directions".
