I have a fear of needles and seeing a piercing really gives me the willies. I have given blood eight times to try to get over the fear, but every time is torture.
So when I see this new generation all poked full of holes, I get pretty grossed out.
If your clients are pin cushions as well, then your choice is totally professional. If your profession involves a lot of old farts, you might try a small stud or clear one that isn't noticeable.
Just think, when you turn 40 the next crowd will do something that turns your stomach too. Just you wait! It's part of life, try to be understanding.

Probably is unfair
In a way .. it is a little wild and irresponsible. You are a bit out side the norm .. just like the beat generation of the 50s with their leather jackets and grease .. the hippies of the 60s with the long hair and flowers, the 70s and their polyester, and somehow I missed the 80s and 90s. But the alternative dress of today.
For reasons I don't really understand either .. Piercings and Tattoos have been taboo in the west and in most of Asia for almost all of time.
I had a great book on this earlier... gone now.. but web searching should help.
American Indians and various other tribal cultures have them, but often not in the quote civilized east and west.
It was the scary people who wore them...
the Mongol golden horde, the blue picts from the north.
In Asia the yukuza have them , but hide them as well most of the time.
It wasn't all that long ago that if you were in the Navy and had a tattoo you could never be an officer. And that attitude bled into US businesses.
Even today where I work, where there are many quote "refugees" who have piercings and "tats" .. all know that they are unprofitable, unpromotable.. never to rise in the corporate ranks at our company. Even in this odd oasis some have been fired for having too dramatic a presentation.

I agree that it is unfair, but in todays professional world they just aren't appropriate. Tattoos are viewed in the same light. Personally I think a person should be judged by the quality of person he/she is, not what they look like. Unfortunately some people are very quick to judge a persons character based on looks alone. I have several very visable tattoos and a labret piercing so I understand where you are coming from. Honestly, the way I see it if someone can't get over my personal appearance then it's their loss and it shows me just how shallow that person really is.

I think it's totally a cultural thing. In some cultures, many or most women have pierced noses, and it's considered normal and attractive. Here, my pierced nose can give people the impression that I am at best "artsy," but also rebellious or self-destructive, which really isn't the case. I just think it's cute. But I also think that facial piercings are becoming much more accepted than they used to be.

I agree with you, some body piercings are a bit much. A eyebrow piercing on the other hand is not at all insane to me??? People are becoming less closed minded about things. Hope maybe their views on this will change!

Because some people have a very narrow and traditional idea of "professional". Yes, it is completely unfair and if someone makes a rude comment then you should politely explain what you did here. The question is, do you know that you are being treated differently, or just assuming?

My son had his tongue pierced for about 8 months. He said he got tired of food getting stuck on it so he took it out (especially Cheerios and Fruit Loops).
Personally I don't like the piercings because I think it makes them look to feminine. A real man shouldn't wear more jewelry than I do.

I agree that it is unfair. More than 50 % of people between the ages of 20 and 30 have peircings and or tattoos according to my mother (I think she is reliable, but don't quote me). We deserve jobs too.

Because its untraditional. I think older generations do not appreciate studs in the eye brow or a tongue ring. Just take it out. Put it back in when your done work.
