My cousin went for a checkup cause she wasn't feeling well and she found out her blood sugar was 181. The doc just told her to drop a few pounds and watch the amount of sugar she eats. He didin't put her on medication which sort of suprised me. Isn't a 181 blood sugar level a cause for medicine or not?

Yes, exercise can lower your blood sugar. It helps to increase your metabolism and for you to lose body fat. When your body cannot use insulin properly, you store sugars as fats. Less fat=Lower sugar.
Lower sugar foods will also help her sugar to stay low. It doesnt mean she cannot eat cake/ice cream/candy etc, just enjoy in moderation. Have a small piece, or a small scoop of ice cream. Starchy foods also. Such as potatoes, corn, bread.
Her doctor may be monitoring her sugar before putting her on medication. He may want to do more blood work before deciding to put her on medication. It also depends a lot on someones HBA1c. It monitors the glucose levels in your plasma. A level of 7 or below is ok. If its very high, it means that the person has poor glucose control (poor insulin function). After they determine the other blood work results, they may decide to do start on medications. Most of the time, they want you to watch your diet and exercise before starting on medicines.

Losing weight helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels, any extra fat you have in your body produces hormones that effect your health in a negative way. If you follow the glycemic index of foods you eat and consume only the foods with a low glycemic load or low glycemic index you will lose weight and maintain steady blood sugar levels. High blood sugar makes you feel lousy. Also he could have given her glucophage or some other blood sugar lowering meds if it was highly elevated however 181 is not extremely high and having a blood sugar level that is too low can be serious as well so messing with those meds can be dangerous.
