You're not saying which e-mail service you're using. I have four yahoo accounts, a gmail account, a comcast account, a .mac account and numerous personal accounts since I own four domains and host them on my own server.

1. Absolutely never click on the unsubscribe link. You're just confirming that they have a valid e-mail address which is like gold to spammers. They make a lot of money from 100% valid e-mail addresses which they sell to other spammers (it's why you get more and more if you do click on the unsubscribe link).

2. Create a second or even a third account. My four accounts are motorcycle specific (all motorcycle forums and mailing lists), junk company specific (when some company want's my e-mail), computer and resume specific (monster, dice, and linux mailing lists), and personal that only my family and friends get. So far only the second one gets spam, sometimes several hundred in a couple of days.

3. Turn off the viewing of graphics in html messages. The graphics can be retrieved from hostile web sites and identify you by your ip address giving them another path into your computer.

4. Don't even open obvious spam messages (viagra, cialis, canadian pharmacies, "replies" from people you don't know, stock tips), just delete them. (By the way, the stock ones ae sent by spammers who own stock in the company, push out a "buy now" spam, suckers buy the stock and they sell at a profit.)

Adjust your spam filter option.

Also, most of the emails are probably coming from the same people. Click on a couple of the emails you see from the same company. At the very bottom in small type font you should see an "unsubscribe" option. Do that with some of the companies, and you will stop getting it from them.
