"There" is one game which seems to fit your description. It mostly involves socializing and taking in the scenery. I haven't played it, but I know you can get vehicles like hoverboards and dune buggies, and then you and your friends can go on a joyride around the place.
"Furcadia" involves anthropomorphic (humanoid) animals socializing and solving puzzles. I played this game for a few minutes, and it was very much not my style. But my style may be different from yours.
"Animal Crossing: Wild World" for the Nintendo DS has a free online mode. In it you get a house which you can decorate with wallpaper, furniture, carpets and such. You can plant trees and flowers and watch them grow. You can make friends with NPC (non-player character) animals, and have any friends who have the game come to visit your town. However, you'll need to buy the game itself (and a DS if you don't have one).

Its a good game.Its called Zeus' Legacy.
Free,fun,worthwhile,and non-download.
