The first day on the mountain is always painful when a person is trying to learn how to snowboard. Every time that you catch an edge the first thing to hit the ground is either your hands and knees or your butt. Once a person learns how to turn and stop, they enjoy it more than anything else that they have ever done. I would suggest wearing a helmet and taking a couple lessons so that you can safely learn how to have a lot of fun. I would rate it as a 5 for difficulty.
P.S. Make sure that you stretch really well before you go to the mountain.

I personally give snowboarding a 6 on the difficulty scale, however, I definitely recommend taking a lesson or two.
I dont believe age is really a factor, but those who are athletic and agile will have a shallower learning curve... remember that you have to learn how to walk before you can run... you'll take a few spills, but learn from your mistakes.
Above all, enjoy the sport... it's some of the most fun you'll ever have with your clothes on!

If you have good balance, going downhill isn't hard. Stopping was my problem. Everytime I tried to stop, I fell right over on my face. Practice balancing on a skateboard before you try the snowboard. That may help.

This is what i have learned
Snowboarding is hard to learn but once you got it down, the rest comes easier
Skiing is easy to learn but hard to master and do tricks on.

The younger you start off the Easier. But overall I would give it a 6.5. Just don't give up on your first time, everybody that I've talked to said that by your second or third time boarding, you'll get the basics down. I started boarding when I was only 10 and I've got 10 years experience.

what are you people talking about with stoping? its not that hard. you just lean back on your heel edge hard. snowboarding is hard, especially at first. mastering the basics is where most people quit. but after that its still challenging but normally not frustraitng. after the basics theres tricks. those are challenging but waay too fun to get frustrated at.
