From where do you derive your information.. I consider myself to be in the category you refer to... I am pretty separate from pessimistic.. But if you will look around you, you will find there are pessimistic people at all ages. As routinely as one finds left handedness in a society. The percentages seem to remain about the same. If one is in that state when young, it usually lasts a life time.

Not all old people are pessimistic about life. There are some that are very happy. I think that once the majority of a person's life is behind them, they feel that their future potential is greatly limited. (How many people go back to school at 40 or 50) And then they look back at how they spent their life and then they'll see a life well lived (usually the happy ones) or a life focused on foolishness, time wasted, stuck in bad relationships, a life void of success or achievement (usually the angry ones). But success and failure is all relative. Some people just choose to see the glass as half empty.

That isn't necessarily true of old people in general, but might simply reflect the ones you've been exposed to.

Some young people do have an overly carefree approach, which overlooks the difficulties.

I believe the best approach is to focus on the possibilities, while also considering anything that can possibly go wrong, and preparing for it. Kind of like writing a business plan. If you approach every aspect of your life that way, you will probably be successful more often than not.

Because years ago you could trust people , and children had more respect for their teachers and parents, and their was such a thing as discipline., and the crime was lower, and you didn't have to be afraid to let your kids play outside alone, or walk a few blocks to the movies themselves. You use to be able to leave your doors unlocked, and trust people, and people helped others in time of need, and neighbors were always looking out for one another. I'm not old yet, but I have lived long enough to know that this world today is far from what it used to be, and I cant see it getting any better even though I wish it were possible for the sake of our children.

Old people are no more or less pessimistic than younger people--they just might be more realistic because of their life experiences. They also have more physical problems which may make them appear pessimistic and grouchy. Ouch

No offense for those of you out there who are old, but old people are probably pessimistic because they know their about to die, and their not to happy about it.

Because theyve been there, theyve seen it, and they know what life is really like as opposed to an inexperienced sweet, yet unrealistic viewpoint.

Thats why.
