Not until 12 months. If you give a baby water too soon you run the risk of them actually dehydrating as the water causes their body to flush out sodium and other important minerals. The chemical balance in their body is very fragile.

There is really no need until 12 months for it anyway as the baby should be getting all the fluids necessary from breastmilk or formula.

you can start giving a baby room temperature boiled water - i used to boil it and keep it at room temperature in a clean, sterilized glass container after the first to second week and give baby maybe an ounce of water so that the baby gets accustomed to the taste - not to worry your breast milk provides all the water the baby needs and formulas also provide all the water requirements as well i found that some formulas cause the baby stool to get hard and that the baby gets fussy-passes wind and seems to be straining - try low dose iron formulas if that happens - always talk to your pediatrician before changing feeds and ask them any questions no matter how silly it seems while you are doing your baby's checkup

hope this helps

Regardless of whether your baby is breast or bottle fed, his milk contains all the nutrients and fluids that he needs so further drinks are not usually necessary.

Health practitioners recommend that babies should be fed nothing but milk, either breast or bottle, up until six months of age, after which solids can be introduced into the diet.

In line with these guidelines, parents are advised that other fluids should be introduced at the same time although your baby's main drink will still be his milk; around a pint a day, whether formula or breast.

Water should be introduced after this time in order to instill good habits.

Hello,

Well, I would say when they want to. I have tried to get my twins to drink water since they were 5 months old. They are not big fans of water at all.

All they will drink is milk. Well, Baby A will only drink milk. Baby B will drink milk and 2oz juice to 2oz water.

Some babies will never like water. That is why if you give your baby oatmeal or rice cereal in the morning, you replace milk with water.

Hope this helps you.. ::-)

I would say 6 months maybe... but, probably best to wait until a year old.

and for the posters who said right after they are born... umm... no, you are really not suggested to do that because water has no nutritional value and it will only fill their stomachs up and they will not take formula or breastmilk until their stomachs get empty from the water... therefore, not a good idea.

Water is okay at anytime, but should never replace feedings. I would also like to add that I have encouraged my daughter to drink water over juice many a time because it helps keep her from getting constipated. It is also really important for kids to have a regular intake of water once they start solid foods. I think juice is a good thing, but it should never replace water.

Well, I just did some research and babies should get enough water from their formula or breast milk until they start on solid foods. At that point you should start adding in water to their diet.

My pediatrician had me giving my son water from the time he was little, I guess times have changed.

You can start giving them water at 3 months. Just a little bit. The reason for that is because the milk sits on the tongue and by giving them water it cleans there tongue and it can't hurt to give them a little water after drinking milk for 2 months 24hrs a day 7 days a week!!

Babies do get all they need from formula or breastmilk however its really up to you what you are comfortable with and whats best for your baby. I personally only gave my summer babies water. it would be so hot and I just felt better if they had a few sips. but I didnt give my winter babies water until summer...making them about 6-7 months old

At 6 mos of age they can begin to have a few sips of water when they have solid meals. They shouldn't have a whole lot of water though.
