In Canada we take our shoes off at the door. Especially if we are visiting people. So, I may ask when they come in "What stinks?" or I may just forget about it.

Well i would clean it up and then I would either complain or apologize. Complain if I didn't own a dog or apologize if I did. Offer to clean the shoes. It is only Pooh and it can be cleaned . Oh I would break out the air freshener or spray too. Laugh it off.

I would apologize profusely to them,
because more than likely it would belong to MY dogs.
I would offer to clean their shoes, then try to clean up
the messes before the smell set in.
BUT...anybody who comes to my house knows beforehand, that this is an animal friendly atmosphere

I would get up and clean it immediately before it left a stain. I'd ask them to please don't move until I got some newspapers or something similar and make a trail to the door. Then I'd ask them to leave their shoes at the door.
Which, we already have habits at our home to take our shoes off at the door....we have light colored carpet.

Probably laugh, because knowing my house it would be brought in, because I have several dogs, I would then ask them nicely to clean up the mess they made.

Ask them to take off their shoes. I will call the carpet cleaners the next day. I would NEVER ask them to help clean it or pay for it to be cleaned. If they offered, I would accept.

I would consider that it surely wasn't intentional. I'd get the cleaner and start cleaning up. Plus I would look outside and get rid of the poo.

That's what my mom screams when we track mud, she'd crap her self if we tracked dog-doo.
