It was the next-door neighbor, an ex milatery man. He, hit on Kevin Spacey after he assumed Kevin was gay; when Kevin turned him down he was humiliated and killed him.

The Marine did it. He thought Kevin Spacey was having an affair with his son. He then tried to make a pass at Kevin Spacey , but spacey turned him down. The Marine went back to his place got his gun and killed spacey while he was waiting to have sex with the young chick. He killed him because he didn't want anyone to know that he had homosexual tendencies.

I saw this film in Australia when it came out and I am pretty sure that an alternative ambiguous ending was shown. I have seen the film on TV later and the ending ties in with the above replies, where the ex-marine did it.
In the original ending I saw which I feel made a much better film we did not see Jane and Ricky or Angela when the gun was fired (proving their innocence). It was also possible that Angela and Lester did have sex, leading to the possibility that Lester commited suicide in shame at what he had/might have done. The most obvious killer was still Col Fitts (the ex-marine) although their is still the possibility of his wife or any of the others who all had motives performing the deed. I have not yet found this ending on youtube so has any one else seen this ending ?

the wife was building up to it, in the car with her gun, and the moviemakers wanted us to think that was how it was going to turn out.
Find an earlier draft of the script and read it. It goes past the murder to the two kids fleeing and being caught, arrested and charged with the Spacey character's murder, which it would have looked like they did, and the marine telling a press conference "I'm sorry it turned out like it did," blaming it publicly on his son. Quite a downer ending it would have been.

it was the marines wife. Her son had a long whisper in his mothers ear before he departed the house for the last time. the quick glimpse of blood was the marines wife. case closed!
