I came up with a different answer:

The Great Wall of China was built over more than two thousand years. Construction on the first section began between the 7th and 6th century BC, and the last work on the wall was done between the 14th and 17th centuries.

After subjugating and uniting China from seven Warring States, the emperor connected and extended four old fortification walls along the north of China that originated about 700 B.C. (over 2500 years ago).

The Great Wall of China is not a continuous wall but is a collection of short walls that often follow the crest of hills on the southern edge of the Mongolian plain. Overall, the wall extends about 1500 miles (2400 kilometers).

A first set of walls, designed to keep Mongol nomads out of China, were built of earth and stones in wood frames during the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BCE).

Some additions and modifications were made to these simple walls over the next millennium but the major construction of the "modern" walls began in the Ming Dynasty (1388-1644 CE).

So you see, it's not a simple answer.

Several walls were built since the 3rd century BC, the most famous being the Great Wall built between 220 BC and 200 BC by the First Emperor, Qin Shi Huangdi (this was located much further north than the current Great Wall of China built during the Ming Dynasty, and little of it remains). The Great Wall of China (Simplified Chinese: 万里长城; Traditional Chinese: 萬里長城; Pinyin: Wànlĭ Chángchéng; literally "10,000 Li¹ long wall") is a Chinese fortification built from 3rd century BC until the beginning of the 17th century, in order to protect the various dynasties from raids by Mongol, Turkic, and other nomadic tribes coming from areas in modern-day Mongolia and Manchuria. ANSWER: 20 years

Yeah, that guy above has got it right: The First Emperor of Qin started building it to protect against what were then considered Barbarian invasions from the north (the Mongols didn't actually exist at that time as far as I know), but it was gradually destroyed - apparently peasants in the Han dynasties around 100 C.E. would go there for bricks for their homes and stuff, tearing down the wall for their own good. The Ming dynasty rebuilt it and expanded it (it actually stretched further during Qin's reign, but was quite short height-wise) mainly as a nationalistic symbol after expelling the Mongol rulers and restoring the bureuacracy of China.

How long did it take to build the "Great Wall of China?

The time it took to build the Great wall of China is about 276 years. Because most of the work was cut out for the people of China. There were walls defending certin cities and the Emperor of China only had to build between the walls to conect them. And the reason of 276 years is that the walls defending the cities took the most time but later about 100 years later they started building inbetween them

It took more than 3 centuries (Over 300 years) to build the Great Wall - Read excerpts from Wikipedia -

The Great Wall of China is a Chinese fortification built from the 14th century until the beginning of the 17th century, in order to protect the various dynasties from raids by Hunnic, Mongol, Turkic, and other nomadic tribes coming from areas in modern-day Mongolia and Manchuria. Several walls were built since the 3rd century BC, the most famous being the Great Wall of China built between 220 BC and 200 BC by the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang (this was located much further north than the current Great Wall of China built during the Ming Dynasty, and little of it remains).

The Great Wall is the world's longest man-made structure, stretching over a formidable 6,352 km (3,948 miles), with a thickness ranging from 4.5 to 9 meters (15-30 feet), and in some areas up to 7.5 meters (25 feet) tall. It runs from Shanhai Pass on the Bohai Sea in the east, at the limit between "China proper" and Manchuria (Northeast China), to Lop Nur in the southeastern portion of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Along most of its arc, it roughly delineates the border between North China and Inner Mongolia.
