Chronic constipation is usually caused by a number of factors. The primary ones being, not enough fluid intake, not enough fiber. You have stated you eat fiber, but is the proportion of fiber you eat, enough for your other caloric intake. Another words, do you eat alot of cheese, hamburgers, french fries, pizza, spicy foods, etc. I to have suffered from chronic constipation, I use to put off bowel movements. For I was very active in college and sports and sometimes when the urge hit, well I simple had other plans. Putting off the call of nature can also cause constipation. I would suggest you try having a bowel movement on a regular basis, such as of a morning, or evening, which ever fits into your schedule best. And to help the schedule along, take a laxative, drink prune juice, if you can stand it, and increase the fiber intake. After a few weeks you should be able to have a pretty regular schedule with your bowel movements. Hope this helps. Thanks for the opportunity to address your question.

A relative was told by his physician to double the amount of plain water he drank and it worked. Added, your diet needs to be all meals with increased fiber. Cereal for breakfast is fine. But lunch and dinner should have some roughage like salad or veggies.

Also exercise encourages parastaltic action (bowel movement) so if you are a couch potato or computer geek, get up and walk outside for 30 minutes a day. Make sure you drink a glass of water before and after you walk.

And, go back to your doctor and tell the doctor the side effects of the medication. There could be another prescription choice.

Try oatmeal (if you are not gluten intolerant - which could cause constipation) - the 5 minute kind. Use for 7 days (1/2 cup a day), or until you are no longer constipated, then keep it up for 3 days a week thereafter to prevent recurrence.

My constipation may have been due to a mix of diabetes and yeast syndrome. I haven't had too much problem since getting onto the anti-yeast diet (which is a very anti-sugar diet too). www.hufa.org has info on blood sugar imbalances and yeast syndromes, if you suspect these are a problem.

Constipation can be a simple sign of a food allergy, we usually think of diarrhea as a sign of food allergy but for many people consipation is a symptom of an allergy. Have an allergy test done. Start elimating high risk allergy foods such as egg whites, strawberries, kiwi, peanuts, milk, etc. Also refrain from constipating foods such as bananas, red meat, apples. I'd also suggest making sure to increase you water intake to 12 cups per day vs. 8. If you also know a nurse that can give you a high fleet enema or disimpaction please ask them. Hope if helps. have you talked to a doctor? I could be something more serious..probably isn't...but you should talk to one just incase. Are you drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day? It's not just a myth..it really helps clean out your system. When snacking...eat things fiber-filled, such as almond, prunes, triscuts, etc. excercise...it gets things movin around inside of your body :)

not sure if this will help you or not, but... my son had chronic constipation when he was real little. the doctor told me to give him half and half of prune juice and 7-up. it worked like a charm. he eventually grew out of it. but he is still little.
try mixing a cup of prune juice and a cup of 7-up and if that doesnt work mix more. not sure if it will work for an adult but its worth a try. make sure you are also drinking lots of fluids, water, apple juice. etc.
good luck

Drink LOTS of water. We need at least one gallon of water per 100 pounds daily. Avoid dairy as that causes constipation. And exercise helps, too.

Best wishes.

If you're pain from any health problem for many years, the it's referred to as as persistent. When it comes instantly and will get cured withion a coulle of days, it's referred to as as acute.
