shut computer down then turn on again, plug mouse in to which ever port it uses, now if a "add new hardware" wizard doesnt come up, go to START, CONROL PANEL, PRINTERS AND ...., find the add Hardware wizard and sellect it, the chose to install the hardware from a selected place, (dont do the top option of installing automatically) click the last selection of the next three on the screen, make sure that is the onlyone selected, i(ts something like browse for the driver ) then when all the hardware items come up click view all or select all on which to browse for, now locat\e the manufactor of your product and click to see if it has the driver for that device,if it does click the correct driver and install it, if not do a generic mouse install ( you will see that option too) when done go to SYSTEM, HARDWARE, DEVICE MANAGER and look at all the devices to see if it installed or it a mark next to the device, if a mark (yellow, red) is there, right click device and "uninstall it" then sit back and wait it will do the reinstalling and configering for you....try this and dont forget to do a "restart" to save settings.
good luck, i know seems complicated but its not once you do it a few times.

Two other things to look at: The mouse and/or the receiver may have an on-off switch that is turned off. Sometimes those little switches appear to be hidden.

My wireless mouse and its receiver have a channel switch so that two wireless mice (and two receivers) can be in the same general area without interference from each other. If yours has channel switches, make sure the same channel is selected on both the mouse and its receiver. If someone else in your house also has a wireless mouse, make sure you are not both using the same channel.

Just check the connection of the mouse. If using USB (like a square shape), just connect it to the USB connection in the laptop. If using PS2 (circle shape), just connect to PS2 connection (normally just follow the color of mouse plug with the color of connection in the laptop). For the current mouse normally using USB connection. Basically if the plug of the mouse can't go into the laptop, don't force it, it will damage the plug.

if it's wireless it might be the batteries. also try unplugging the mouse, turn the computer off, plug up the mouse and turn the computer back on. This will help the computer to recognize the mouse.

If your computer is not working properly when it is switched on, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.

is your computer MAC?
if so, than go to system preferences (the light switch on ur dashboard) and go to Mouse and keyboard and it will tell u if its out of batteries or if the connection was lost
if your computer is PC, check the batteries, or go to My Computer and go to mouse and see if the bluetooth is dead

if it doesnt work... two reasons, drivers are not installed on the computer for your mouse or its just not capable of working with the mouse
