This seems to be a common question and one that most computer users should ask. The first thing is what is available in your area. That may or may not sum it down. Now, the next thing is what will you be doing? A lite connection (DSL lite or Cable lite) is good for the normal checking e-mail and average surfing. The more you do the faster connection you want. You want fast upload speeds if you wish to upload lots of photos and/or video. If your a gamer, you may want the higher speed connection. Your better off getting too much speed than too little when it comes to the connection speed.
Oh, one more thing to factor in. How many computers will be feeding off this connection? If you set up a home network and have three computers use that one connection, you may want to go a little faster to accommodate those computers without loosing too much speed.

Most ISPs want you to use their browser or install the information from a disk that will help you use their Internet Service. These programs and abundance information may slow down your computer and it may not be your ISP at all. It may be the software that came with the ISP. Try setting up a manual connection. And use that information. Your user name which is usually your email through their services and the password you set up.

Another good hint is firefox. I got it recently and don't know how I did without it. LoL.

TRY : Setting up a Manual Internet Connection and Using a Firefox browser. Firefox is a free download.

Hope this helps, Know how ya feel. I'm also stuck with Dial up. Due to my area.

Good Luck,
Jim

Stop using Internet Explorer & use Firefox as your web browser. Firefox does not have all of the junk running that IE does and also uses better compression so it is able to surf faster (basically what high speed dial up is). + Firefox has an extension called Faster Fox that will speed it up faster.

Other than that you can tweak your internet options to disable the display of pictures, sound, video all files that make a web page load slow.

Dial up is cheap and easy, but it's slow.. The next step up is to cable or DSL, don't let anybody talk you into a more expensive dial up, they all have the same limitation,

If you have cable television available in your area, the cable companies often offer data services, I pay $45US/month for the data portion of my cable bill. Your phone company may offer ADSL or DSL, which comes over phone lines but is not dial up. You have to live within a certain distance of the phone station, or it won't work. Where I live, ATT/Yahoo has very aggressive teaser rates, but he prices goes up after a year.
