Each of us is made up of tiny things called 'cells' (use anatomy pictures, or show pages from the anatomy coloring book). One part of each 'cell' is a kind of information key, like the hard drive in your computer, which controls how that cell makes copies of itself in order to heal when damage has been done to the person that the cells are part of. There are even special cells that only have 1/2 of a key each, so that when that person mates with a person of the opposite gender, the 2 1/2-s come together to make a new, unique key and so that the cells can multiply in such a way as to make a new person.

the genes you get 1/2 come from the father and 1/2 from the mother. This is why people that are related have similar features.
