People often think of summer as the time to plant.....wrong! Plants planted in the summer are going to experience heat and dryness. They need to be watered frequently, and will put on a show for the summer, but one season is the end of annuals (hence the name....they are only good for the year you plant them). Any plant that is rated as good for your climate is a great choice to plant now. They will be able to establish a root system because the rain will water them and next year will reward you with flowers and growth (if it does get too dry in your area, new plants might need to be watered even in fall or winter to keep their root systems developing). Of course, fall is a great time to plant bulbs as well, daffs, tulips, crocus, hyacinth, whatever strikes your fancy. You'll have a great show in the spring.

This involves your climate. I live in the south west and I have just planted some pansies, mums, and some ornamental cabbage. Other than that, the most I ever plant at this time of year are spring bulbs that won't come out until spring to bloom.
If you live in a cold or snowy climate...there isn't much else you can plant other than the spring bulbs.

It depends.. If you are in New York/Maine/etc.. I would not plant until March or April of next year.. If you are in so. Calif/New Mexico/Southern Texas/Arizona/etc.. you could still plant any PERENNIAL.. It is still time for them to catch root and survive the limited cold weather in those areas

Icicle pansies are good to plant this year if you live in the Northeast region of the U.S.
They are very pretty and last all winter long.

Always check at your local nursery. Then be aware of what the professionals are growing and selling locally. I always check with the guys at the farmers market.
