I live in a city where I see alot of abandoned vehicles. I currently don't have a vehicle but would like one (of course). Is there anyway I could take posession of one of the abandoned vehicles? I live in New York State. I know for sure that these cars are abandoned. There is a law in New York State that allows citizens to take ownership of abandoned property so I am worrying if you can take ownership of abandoned vehicles.

own a repair shop, and there is no law that allows you to do that,it would be considered theft of a motor vehicle if you bought it an a police auction that would be different but as of now new york has no such law that allows individuals to take possession of someone else,s vehicle,,good luck i hope this help,s.

New York has become much stricter on title law in the last 10 years or so, however, if you recorded the VIN and had a title search done, you could contact the last owner of the vehicle and ask them if they wished to have it hauled away. I have recieved a couple of motorcycles this way, usually for very cheap or free. I am riding a 82 KZ1000 that was a freebie this coming summer.

truth is they weren't left there by lazy rich people-there is NO FREE LUNCH! you will have to repair one of these GEMS and then clean it out real good and hope the drug dog does not hit on anything left in car or hope the person who abandoned said car doesen't see it fixed and running again and decide on a little REPO action himself (my friend got car at sherrifs auction and dope head jacked it back when he saw it) and also remember any crimes commited in that car stay in cops minds -hey there goes that armed robbers car!

if they are left there they are either stolen or broken down. the owner still owns it till the car has been taken to a scrap yard or sold on to someone else.

At any rate taking someone elses propery is still stealing even you know that so dont ask stupid questions!
