UGH! I am struggling with this one myself! It really depends on the baby. All three of mine were different. In general you start with rice cereal first around three months, but you have to make it really soupy for them to be able to digest it. Then you slowly start adding other things. Around four months you can try oatmeal cereal. Then you introduce one baby food at a time banannas for a few days. Then carrots. etc. Different people have different theories like do not give sweet stuff first, or you will ruin their desire to veggies. I have not found this to be true, but all kids are different. My son is now nine months and we got the go ahead at the doctor for him to be able to start doing mash potatoes and other mooshy foods. Good thing, because I had been offering these since about seven or eight months on a limited basis, because he just seemed interested in what we were eating. Yes, they say not to give them anything with dairy or nuts until after a year, because of allergy issues and the risk of causing intestinal bleeding with dairy products, but if you read baby food labels carefully you will see that some of them contain dairy and cheese. Also, most people make their mash potatoes with dairy goods. I think you just really need to becareful and know what you are admitting into baby's diet. Let the baby lead you in terms of what he/she is ready to eat. See how they do moving from liquid, to a little thicker, to mooshy, to bite size....they will guide you. Your pediatrican should be able to help you as well, and if you ask they often will provide you with a hand-out that is of some guidance. I also do a lot of label reading at the store. Some foods actually put on the container, "If your baby is able to do this (then they list of things like crawling etc.) then the baby is ready for this food." Happy feeding!

Sweet Potatoes can be eaten as soon as they start solids like rice cereal or veggies, which for most babies is 6-7 months. Most doctors will tell you to start with yellow/orange veggies, then go to green veggies, then fruits. White potatoes ("yukon gold" and such) are not recommended for babies under 8 months. My daughter is 8 months and I make her baby food at home, she just had mashed white potatoes yesterday! All I did was thin them out with a little water while I was puree'ing them, then I mixed in a little formula before feeding her until they were the right consistency. Hope this helped!

You can start babies on solids at around 6 months. Baby needs to exhibit readiness signs such as, sitting unsupported, lack of tongue thrush reflex, ability to manipulate and swallow thicker foods. Some people prefer to wait until the baby also has the thumb and finger grasp, and feed small bits of soft foods. Earlier than 6 mos is not acceptable due to the immaturity of the digestive system. The recommendations from the AAP are changing to say 6 months for formula fed infants and 6-9 months for breast fed infants. Mashed potatoes contain milk, so I would wait until closer to a year. Some dairy products, such as yogurt and hard cheeses, are ok around 9 months. That is because the milk protein has been altered so much. Starting solids too early increases the risk of diabetes, allergies, and obesity.

lactancy period recommended is 12 months, which is good for both mother and child, except if the mother is HIV positive. Babies should not be given any cow milk or fruit juices before they're 6 months old, instead baby formula is an alternative for mother's milk.
About 4-6 months of age, the baby is usually prepared to consume solid food, besides the mother milk or some baby formula. Every baby is different and it is necessary to offer him(her) solid food to his(her, your) own(proper) pace. In general, there are given to the baby some cereals elaborated with rice, wheat, oats or barley, in small quantities, and introduced only once every time. These cereals are diluted in mother milk or formula.
You must never feed a baby with table food(food you eat using forks).
Later on, the baby progresses in his(her) food; from the cereals to baby food, that usually simple, easy to digest (little flavored), without fats, insipid and in the shape of puree(battered up to obtaining a thick consistency). For some babies the doctor can recommend supplements as vitamin D and Iron.

Mashed potatoes can start @ 7 months according to dr. Sears, but you should ask your pediatrician as they would know your child's development better than anyone of us online. Also follow your instincts after asking YOU KNOW YOUR BABY BETTER.
Here's a website that might help

Good luck.

i would wait until your done with table foods. once a baby starts eating table food, they usually don't want to go back to the bland, nasty tasting baby food from the jars. i would wait till they are able to feed themselves. hold off on the salt and butter. it may be a little rich for the tummy's especially with too much milk in it. my daughter started eating mashed potatoes about 8 months.
